I love painting snow, and can't resist exploring the surrounding neighborhood after a good snow storm. On this snowy morning, I found myself walking along the arroyo that runs behind E.J. I started this piece working en plein air in Cerrillos, New Mexico. I am drawn to the abstract shapes created by intersecting roof lines commonly found in the Southwest. The faded lettering on the side of one of the buildings made this scene irresistible to me.

Long Shadows

Pastel on prepared Masonite
I created a textured surface for this painting by treating a masonite board with gesso, followed by a coat of Art Spectrum's fine tooth Colourfix Primer. The texture allows the rubbed in underpainting to sparkle through subsequent applications of pastel. I also like the soft edges achieved with this method.

I find the winter colors around Santa Fe to be more varied and interesting than what I see in the summer. After the shrubs and trees shake off their leaves, wonderful yellow, red, green and orange branches and twigs are revealed. This is especially apparent along the marshes and wetlands.

Spring Chamisa

Our spring landscapes are filled with soft blues and greens. Although Chamisa blossoms turn deep yellow in the fall, they are a delicate soft yellow-green in the Spring, which strikes a beautiful harmony with the blue green foliage. I started this piece working outside at one of our dog parks. Yep - this is what our dog parks are like in Santa Fe!
